Depression is a prevalent mental disorder that is characterised by a lingering sense of melancholy and a loss of interest in once-loved activities. Depression affects our eating, sleeping, and thought processes. It prevents us from adjusting to the demands of society.
Sadness versus depression.
While sadness is a common human emotion that everyone feels from time to time, depression is a mental health condition marked by enduring melancholy, hopelessness, and disinterest in or enjoyment from activities.
Being sad is a normal, healthy reaction that enables us to deal with our feelings and move on.
Conversely, depression is a more profound and protracted state of melancholy and adverse feelings. It may last for several months or even years, interfering with our typical days. That kind of response to any situation is neither normal nor healthy.
Forms of depression.
Some typical forms of depression are listed below.
Clinical Depression (Major depressive disorder); This is a frequent kind of depression marked by a constant sense of hopelessness, melancholy, and a host of negative emotions.
Persistent Depressive Disorder : This is a milder but more enduring form of depression. A lingering sense of melancholy, pessimism, and disinterest in hobbies or pastimes for a minimum of two years are its defining characteristics. It is also more difficult to identify because its symptoms are comparable to those of the clinical condition but are less severe. The quality of our life can be impacted by PDD symptoms, even though they may not be severe enough to interfere with it.
Seasonal affective disorder: This isa type of depression that fluctuates with the seasons, because they are believed to be a gloomy season. Some people experience melancholy during the rainy season; nevertheless, these feelings fade as another season approaches.
