The Mental Health Community Outreach (MHCO) is designed to take child and adolescent mental health awareness beyond schools and into the heart of local communities. The initiative creates safe, open spaces where children, parents, teachers, and community members can learn about mental health in simple, relatable ways.
Through planned community-based events held in accessible venues such as community halls and open fields, participants are engaged through awareness talks, interactive discussions, and question-and-answer sessions focused on children’s emotional and behavioural wellbeing. Resource materials and referral contact cards are also shared to support continued learning and access to help where needed.
The inaugural MHCO outreach was held in Ilaje community of Bariga, where 60 community members participated, including children and young people who made up about 30% of attendees. To ensure inclusivity and meaningful engagement, the sessions were facilitated in both English and Yoruba.
Following the outreach, feedback revealed that many parents were engaging with the concept of mental health as it relates to children for the first time. This reinforced the importance of community-level conversations in increasing understanding, reducing stigma, and encouraging early support for children and adolescents.
